How to Check for Unauthorized Legal Services in California
A practical consumer checklist based on State Bar of California fraud-prevention and complaint resources. It provides general information, not individualized legal advice.
- Look up the individual lawyer in the State Bar of California attorney search before signing an agreement, paying money or sharing sensitive documents. Confirm that the license is active and compare the listed professional contact information with what you were given.
- Be cautious if a person gives legal advice but cannot be found as an active California attorney. The State Bar calls legal advice by an unlicensed person the unauthorized practice of law.
- Do not rely on a business name, advertising claim or title such as legal consultant or notario as proof that someone is authorized to practice law. Verify the individual attorney instead.
- Ask for the lawyer's full name and State Bar number, the scope of services and fees in writing, and keep copies of advertisements, agreements, receipts, messages and payment records.
- If contact details differ from the State Bar profile, use the profile's verified information to contact the attorney or firm directly before proceeding.
- If you believe someone provided legal advice without a license or impersonated a lawyer, the State Bar provides a no-cost unauthorized-practice complaint process. The complaint form is available in multiple languages.
- For licensed-attorney misconduct or fee concerns, use the State Bar's separate attorney-complaint and fee-dispute resources. Choose the process that matches the concern.
