Finding Free or Low-Cost Legal Help in California
A practical directory of official California Courts and State Bar starting points for people who may not be able to afford full-service representation. This is general information, not individualized legal advice.
- Start with the California Courts free and low-cost legal-help page. It explains the differences among court self-help programs, legal-aid organizations, lawyer referral services and limited-scope representation.
- Use your local superior court's Self-Help Center for free legal information, forms and explanations of procedural options. Self-help staff do not represent you, cannot go to court for you and cannot tell you what decision to make.
- Check legal-aid eligibility and service coverage. Programs may limit help by income, location, case type or available capacity, so confirm current requirements directly with the organization.
- Search the State Bar's directory of certified lawyer referral services by county, area of law and language. A certified service may connect you with a local lawyer who handles the relevant type of matter.
- Ask the referral service about the consultation fee before scheduling. The State Bar says referred lawyers must be in good standing, carry professional liability insurance and offer an initial consultation for a reduced fee or no fee.
- If full representation is not affordable, ask whether limited-scope services are appropriate and what work would remain your responsibility. Get the division of work and fees in writing.
- Verify any individual lawyer through the State Bar attorney search before hiring or paying. A referral or directory listing is a starting point, not a recommendation or guarantee of outcome.
- Do not delay because you are looking for low-cost help. Filing, claim and notice deadlines can be short and case-specific; seek qualified guidance promptly when a deadline may apply.
