How to Check a California Attorney Before a Consultation
Use official California resources to check an attorney's license and prepare questions about an injury case.
- Search the individual attorney's name in the State Bar of California attorney search; a firm name alone does not establish a lawyer's license status.
- Review the license status and any public disciplinary history shown by the State Bar. Practice areas supplied by attorneys are self-reported.
- Ask which lawyer will handle your matter and what experience that person has with similar cases.
- Discuss fees, expenses, communication and the written agreement before signing.
- Keep documents, photographs and important dates together and ask about deadlines that may apply to your situation.
